Legendary Gibson Dove as played by Elvis, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Alex Lifeson among countless others.
This Gibson Dove has solid maple back and sides, a maple neck with ebony fretboard and the iconic parallelogram inlays. It has a spruce top. There are Grover tuners. There is the lovely handmade dove wing bridge with mother of pearl inlays, and of course the distinctive engraved pickguard with inlaid mother of pearl dove. Natural finish top with the distinctive antique cherry finish on the back, sides, and the neck. This is not a reissue – this is an original 1976 vintage guitar. This has been professionally set up by an expert luthier.
There are no electronics fitted. The body is in amazing condition for a 40 year old guitar. There are no major bangs, gouges or scratches but of course this is a vintage instrument so you will have the normal wear commensurate with that age. There is some roughness and a slight paint run at the nut which we have tried to show. There is also a small mark at the point of the scratchplate above the doves head which you can see in another shot.
The trade off of course is, despite the odd mark, you also have the lovely patina that only comes as the wood matures. The ageing of the wood ensures that deep rich, warm Gibson sound that makes these guitars so sought after.
It belonged to a Gibson factory employee because the 3 inch dark line in the grain of the wood - which runs from just outside the scratchplate to finish alongside the base of the bridge - was considered a cosmetic flaw. In fact it makes the guitar even more wonderful and distinctive. We have taken an image of this for you but it is very much part of the look anyway. This in no way effects the beauty or playability of the guitar – nor its collectability. Because of this there is a 2 after the serial number on the headstock.
The guitar comes with the original Gibson hard case. One lock has broken off at some point ( it still works fine ) but the rest of the case is very decent and it does the job (as you can see from the superb condition of the guitar!).
